On the Trail of the Missing Ozone

The US EPA wanted a vehicle to explain ozone depletion to a middle-school audience. When we considered the causes and effects of ozone destruction, we looked at a view of the universe that took us into the stratosphere, under the microscope, and into today’s homes and industries. We looked at a comic book. Using the fun and flexibility of illustration interwoven with storytelling, we were able to craft an educational piece that engaged and instructed students without aiming over their heads or talking down to them. Today, there are more than half a million copies in use in classrooms across the United States.
